An Artist writes Poetry — For all who think you can’t make Art

Artist ventures into writing poetry to encourage children who tried Art during the Lockdown period.

With over 35 paintings on canvas, Ms. Rohini Indran’s Blogspot http://rohiniindran.blogspot.com/ now features a Book in PDF format.

The title is My Beautiful Ugly Art. In just over 20 odd pages she inspires the artist in children (and in all of us).

Using only 2 lines of poetry on each page and a not-so-perfect image of a child, rendered in ink and colored pencils, she depicts the frustrations of trying to produce “pretty pictures.”

The poem starts with: I thought that I was not good at drawing, Although I kept trying, trying and trying…

She continues to inspire with: Art can be about seeing or feeling, Draw from your heart not what is pleasing…

What fascinates me is that then the technical and artistic knowledge Ms. Rohini has acquired over the years (perhaps from volunteering with underprivileged children) shines through in these verses: Draw from things that are all around you, Break down the forms make it easier to do, Vertical Horizontal Zigzag Spiral Also Curvy, Mix up the Lines and build your own city

Of Ms. Rohini’s work, one of my favorites is Orizuru, acrylic on canvas that depicts the Ori-Tsuru (folded-crane). This tells the story of a young girl, keeping the beauty of a species of nature that is close to extinction, alive through art and her imagination.

She ( the child or the Artist?) seeks to remind us to save the splendor of nature and ancient crafts in a time when human beings live a fast-paced life, ruled by technology.

The painting below shows the most haunting eyes that I have ever seen.

The Orphan’s Eyes — Acrylic on canvas by Rohini Indran

The Orphan’s Eyes is Acrylic on canvas and the artist describes her inspiration for this painting as below :

After getting to know and spending time with this adorable child, calling him an Orphan is painful, to think that such a sweet and innocent being could have been abandoned and left to be brought up in this mad world all alone. Just like the questioning look in his eyes, I too wonder, just what lies ahead for this baby.
